Congratulations to our Lions and Lady Lions who competed in the Area Track & Field Meet yesterday and qualified for the Class 3A Region 1 Track & Field Meet. We will post a story with meet results and photos on Saturday.

There has been a slight change in today's softball schedule, as the Lady Lions travel to Bowie to take on the Lady Rabbits. There will be no JV game, and the varsity game has been pushed back to a 7 p.m. start. The Lions will also be in Bowie taking on the Jackrabbits in District 7-3A action. The JV baseball game will start at 4:30 p.m., with the varsity game to follow at 7 p.m.

The VHS Drama Department will present their One-Act Play "1984" in two performances for the general public. The first performance will be tonight at 6:30 p.m., at the Wilbarger Auditorium, which recently installed new stage lights. The second performance will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday at the VHS Cafeteria. The admission is $5. Some contents of the play may not be suitable for young children. It is advised children attending should be middle school age and older.

Five Vernon Lions will be participating in the Maskat Shrine Oil Bowl All-Star Game on June 15, in Wichita Falls. Selected for the Oil Bowl were Johnny Pruitt, Kale Sherrill, Ismael Urista, Shyne Rodriguez, Jevon Fanner and Julius Dawkins. Julius was also selected for the Oil Bowl basketball game and has opted to play in the basketball game.

In support of Vernon's biggest Lion fan, VHS is providing a way for all students and staff to attend the funeral of our beloved Kathy Burnett. Students and teachers will follow a pep rally schedule and will be released at 2:40 pm on Friday. If you, as a parent, plan for your child to attend, your student will need to be signed out in the office to be released to the services. Vernon High School will forever hold Kathy in our hearts and will keep the family in our thoughts and prayers during this most difficult of times. We will always remember her unwavering support and loyalty to our students and forever be thankful for the impact she made on so many young lives. Parents can begin calling tomorrow to give permission for their students to be released at 2:40 on Friday.

Due to the rainouts on Tuesday and the wet field conditions today, Vernon's District 7-3A baseball and softball home games against Jacksboro will be played this evening in Holliday. Fans going to the games are advised to park in the parking lots by the gym or the football field and walk to the fields. Parking WILL NOT be allowed on Eagle Drive, the narrow road that runs in front of the new baseball and softball fields, due to water standing in the ditches.

On Tuesday, students in Mr. Brett White's AP World History class reenacted the painting of the Sistine Chapel. Students were given duct tape to tape their paper to the underside of their desk and painted the "Creation of Adam" by Michelangelo. Painting the ceiling required Michelangelo to lay high above the ground on a scaffold. Mr. White said this was the best they could do, but he thought the students gained a new level of appreciation for both the artwork and the artist.

There's going to be a lot of fun Monday night at D.O. Fulton Gym during the VHS Students vs. VISD Staff basketball game. The fundraiser benefits the VHS Class of 2026 and the Boys & Girls Club Sunshine League. Head on out and enjoy the event Monday night.

Four Vernon Lions have been selected to play in the FCA Texas/OU All-Star Showdown that will be held Friday, June 7, in Iowa Park. A big congratulations to the Lions!!

There will be two Lions and one Lady Lion representing Vernon in the Maskat Shrine Oil Bowl All-Star basketball and volleyball games this year. Cirstin Ivy was selected for the all-star volleyball game, while Kell Castleberry and Julius Dawkins were selected for the all-star basketball game. Julius was also selected for the football game, but opted to play in the basketball game. Congratulations to you all!!

Today is School Librarian Appreciation Day and we want to tell all of our librarians how much you are truly appreciated for all you do for our students. Along with being school librarians, all of you do so much more at your campuses. Thank you!

Congratulations to Christopher Martinez and Kaylee DeLaune who were crowned King and Queen of the 2024 VHS Prom which was held Saturday night at the VHS Cafeteria.

Today's baseball and softball games have been canceled due to field conditions stemming from the rain we received this morning.
At the present time, the Lions baseball game has been moved to tomorrow. It will be varsity only starting at 5 p.m., at Jabe Brazzle Field.
The date and place to makeup the Lady Lions softball game has not yet been determined.
If the area receives more rain tonight or in the morning, game plans may be adjusted once again.

Yesterday VHS seniors picked up their caps and gown for the Class of 2024 Commencement. Just another sign that time is slipping away and graduation is just 46 days away!!!

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Mason Ford, Timothy McLaughlin, Yuleyka Ramirez and Kaiden Ortiz who passed their CTE Industry-based certification exam last week and are now Adobe Certified Professionals!! Awesome job!!

Here are a few more photos of our VHS students watching yesterday's solar eclipse at Leo Brittain Field at Lion Stadium. Following the eclipse an End of Course pep rally was held at the stadium to get the students pumped up for their EOC tests that start today and continue over the next three weeks. GOOD LUCK STUDENTS!!! We KNOW you're going to ROCK those tests!!

This is School Librarian Appreciation Day and earlier today VHS Principal Cynthia Jackson presented VHS Librarian Gayla Dehoyos with a plant and a big thank you for all she does for Vernon High School.

From our youngest students to our oldest, those on the McCord and High School campuses enjoyed their time watching the solar eclipse this afternoon.

Yesterday, the VHS Seniors hosted a "Meet and Greet" Forum for Vernon mayor candidates Pam Goslin and Dustin Fraticelli. Each candidate spent 30 minutes with the seniors. Government/History teacher Brett White asked each candidate the same questions. The floor was then opened for students to ask questions. This was a great opportunity for our seniors, 79 of which are are eligible to vote, to learn more about the views of each candidate as well as the process of running for an elected office. We appreciate Pam and Dustin for taking the time to give back to our students.

Our Vernon Lion tennis team is competing in the Abilene Tournament today and Saturday. Good luck netters!!!
